Summary (as of 27.10.2026)

Uniform company clothing with a company logo and name embroidery strengthens the brand image in customer contact and makes it easier to identify staff on construction sites and company premises. In practice, the base fabric, the logo size (up to 50, 300 or 500 cm²) and the washing temperature determine the choice between direct embroidery and a transfer logo. For personal protective equipment under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, such as high-visibility, weather or heat protective clothing, minimum areas according to DIN EN ISO 20471 and DGUV Information 212-016 as well as flame-retardant materials according to DIN EN ISO 11612 must be strictly observed to maintain approval.

When a construction team arrives at a major construction site, service technicians maintain an industrial customer's plant, or employees in a logistics center welcome visitors, the first thing people notice is their clothing. Uniform colors, a clearly placed company logo on the chest and back, and legible name embroidery immediately build trust and signal professional care.

For the brand image to remain convincing over time, however, the textile material, application technique, logo position and print data must work together precisely. This becomes even more important when protective clothing is involved: applying a high-visibility jacket in the wrong place or piercing a waterproof membrane compromises its protective effect and legal compliance. Below, you will learn when direct embroidery or a transfer logo is the right choice, which positions work best on jackets, vests, shirts and work trousers, and how the ordering process with proofing in the company is structured.

Why uniform company clothing makes a difference in everyday B2B

In trades, construction, industry and building services, personalized workwear fulfills four specific operational functions:

  • Trust and orientation for the customer: In customer service and on third-party company premises, clients, security guards and contacts can tell at a glance which company the specialists belong to. Additional name embroidery at chest height makes it easier to address them personally on site.
  • Safety and access control on construction sites: On large construction sites or in logistics halls with multiple trades, own teams can be immediately distinguished from third-party companies or unauthorized persons.
  • Identification within the own team: High-quality clothing in a uniform company style strengthens the sense of belonging from the apprentice to the construction manager and supports employee recruitment.
  • Lasting visibility in the regional environment: Whether on the way to the construction site, at the building materials dealer or at a customer appointment: back and chest logos make the company visible in daily operations.

Direct embroidery, transfer logo and name embroidery: The processes compared

For heavily used workwear that must withstand dirt, abrasion and frequent industrial washing in everyday work, two professional application processes and the complementary name embroidery are primarily in focus:

Direct embroidery, transfer logo and name embroidery for workwear compared
Process Technical execution Strengths in everyday work Technical limitations and notes
Direct embroidery Multi-head embroidery machines bring the motif directly into the carrier fabric using tear- and color-fast embroidery threads based on an embroidery program (punch file) Elegant three-dimensional feel, extremely abrasion-resistant, suitable for boiling and industrial washing, very long service life on sturdy fabrics Not suitable for fine color gradients or fonts under 5 mm high; pierces waterproof membranes on weather protection jackets
Transfer logo (heat transfer / DTF transfer) The motif is printed on a carrier film, provided with a hot-melt adhesive layer, and pressed firmly to the textile fiber under exactly defined pressure and temperature Razor-sharp edges, finest lines, small fonts and multicolored gradients possible; flat, stretchable and also suitable for functional and membrane textiles Care instructions (washing temperature, do not iron directly over the transfer motif) must be observed
Name embroidery (optional with direct embroidery) Personalized first and last name as direct embroidery in clear standard fonts and coordinated thread colors (black, white, silver gray or dark blue) Clear assignment of the garments in the company and laundry room, personal appearance in direct customer contact Implemented in combination with direct embroidery; the assignment of individual names to the garment sizes is done item by item

In practice, a simple rule based on fabric weight and construction helps with the selection: Sturdy mixed fabrics from about 240 g/m², such as work jackets, bib overalls, vests, fleece jackets and heavy polo shirts, offer optimal hold for direct embroidery without the fabric pulling together. Lightweight T-shirts, elastic functional underwear, thin softshells and waterproof rainwear, on the other hand, can be equipped more cleanly and without needle perforation with a transfer logo.

The right logo placement and size on jackets, shirts, vests and trousers

So that a company logo is not covered by tool bags, suspenders, name tags or a safety harness worn over it in everyday work, fixed standard positions have been established for each clothing group. The logo size is also divided into three area categories for transparent calculation:

  • Small logo size (up to 50 cm², for example 10 × 5 cm): Ideal for subtle chest logos, sleeve badges, bib pockets or the thigh and side pocket area on work trousers.
  • Medium logo size (up to 300 cm², for example 25 × 12 cm): Suitable for striking shoulder or upper back placements on vests, shirts and work jackets.
  • Large logo size (up to 500 cm², for example 28 × 18 cm): Designed for large-area back emblems on work jackets, sweatshirts and high-visibility vests that must also be readable from a greater distance on the construction site.

The following overview shows which positions are technically provided and clearly visible in everyday work on which garments:

Overview of selectable logo positions by product group
Product group Positions on the front Positions on the sleeves / sides Position on the back
Jackets, long-sleeved shirts and sweatshirts Chest left, chest right Sleeve left, sleeve right Back (centered in the upper shoulder and back area)
Vests and high-visibility vests Chest left, chest right no sleeve position Back
T-shirts and polo shirts Chest left, chest right Sleeve left, sleeve right Back
Work trousers Thigh front left, thigh front right Side pocket no back position (covered by overhanging garments)
Bib overalls Bib pocket (centered on the chest), thigh front left, thigh front right Side pocket no back position

In practice, many companies combine two positions per garment: the company logo (up to 50 cm²) is on the left chest, the individual name embroidery of the employee on the right chest, and the large company emblem (up to 300 or 500 cm²) on the back. For a uniform team appearance, brand manufacturers like Dassy or Hakro offer continuous color series from work trousers for road construction or gardening and landscaping to polo shirts for construction management.

Norm-compliant on PPE: What companies must pay attention to with protective clothing

As soon as garments are not just general workwear but fall under personal protective equipment under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, any subsequent modification is subject to strict safety rules. Improper application of emblems can lead to the EU type-examination certificate expiring and the protective function failing in case of danger. Four protection areas require special care:

1. High-visibility clothing according to DIN EN ISO 20471:2017-03 and DGUV Information 212-016

For highly visible high-visibility clothing (currently valid edition of DIN EN ISO 20471:2017-03; the revision prEN ISO 20471:2026 is currently in draft) the high-visibility class 1, 2 or 3 depends directly on the freely visible minimum area of the fluorescent background material (for daytime visibility) and the retroreflective strips (for nighttime visibility):

  • Class 3: at least 0.80 m² background material and 0.20 m² reflective material
  • Class 2: at least 0.50 m² background material and 0.13 m² reflective material
  • Class 1: at least 0.14 m² background material and 0.10 m² reflective material

According to DGUV Information 212-016 "High-visibility clothing", any area covered by a non-fluorescent company logo no longer counts as effective background area. If a class 2 high-visibility vest only has a narrow area reserve over the required 0.50 m² from the factory, a large back logo (up to 500 cm², i.e. 0.05 m²) can push the free area below the limit value, so that the vest loses its classification in class 2. Reflective strips may generally not be overprinted, cut through, or embroidered over. Many manufacturers therefore specify exactly in the data sheet how many square centimeters of logo area are permitted on the respective model, or design the upper shoulder and chest area in a dark contrast fabric from the factory, on which logos can be applied without reducing the fluorescent material. You can read all the details about the classes in our post High-visibility clothing class 1, 2 and 3 according to EN ISO 20471.

2. Heat, flame and welding protection (DIN EN ISO 11612 and DIN EN ISO 11611)

On flame-retardant protective clothing according to DIN EN ISO 11612, clothing for welding protection according to DIN EN ISO 11611 (currently under revision) or protective clothing against electric arc flash according to DIN EN 61482-2, conventional polyester embroidery threads or low-melting standard transfer films may not be used on the outside. In case of flame or electric arc exposure, such materials would melt, continue to burn and cause severe burns. Here, only flame-retardant special threads (for example made of aramid) or flame-retardant transfers tested according to the respective protective clothing standard are permitted.

3. Rainwear and weather protection clothing according to DIN EN ISO 24232 (formerly DIN EN 343)

If a waterproof weather protection jacket according to DIN EN ISO 24232 (formerly DIN EN 343) is directly embroidered in the chest or back area with thousands of needle stitches, the needle pierces the climate membrane underneath. Without subsequent internal seam sealing, water penetrates through every stitch channel during continuous rain. For membrane clothing according to DIN EN ISO 24232 or weather and cold protection, the flatly pressed transfer logo is therefore the technically safe solution (provided the pressing temperature is matched to the membrane).

4. Forestry protective clothing according to DIN EN ISO 11393

In cut-resistant trousers and jackets for forestry protection according to DIN EN ISO 11393 (formerly EN 381), loose-fitting, high-strength cut-resistant fibers are located in the front leg area, which are pulled out on contact with the saw chain and block the chain wheel in fractions of a second. This protection area must not be embroidered through under any circumstances, as the embroidery seam would fix the loose fibers and invalidate the blocking function.

How you check the legal obligations and standard markings for personal protective equipment overall is shown in our guide Choosing PPE correctly: What is behind categories and standards; for the systematic risk assessment in the company, we refer to the post Occupational health protection vs. occupational safety.

Print data, proofing and process in company purchasing

So that the implementation for your team is smooth, a clear preparation of the data and ordering steps is recommended in the company:

  1. Provide logo files in print-ready quality: For razor-sharp contours in the transfer process and for the creation of the embroidery program (punching), a vector file in PDF format (alternatively EPS or SVG with fonts converted to paths) or a high-resolution graphic file as PNG (with transparent background) or JPG up to a file size of maximum 5 MB per file is suitable. If two different motifs are combined on a garment (for example chest logo and back logo), keep both files ready separately.
  2. Check color variants for light and dark textiles: A dark blue or black company logo requires a cut-out white or silver gray variant on anthracite or navy blue work jackets so that the contrast remains from a distance.
  3. Confirm names and sizes: If jackets or shirts are to be additionally provided with an individual name embroidery (in black, white, silver-grey or dark blue), first record the total quantity and then assign the specific first and last names to the respective sizes of the employees.
  4. Check and approve the proof before production begins: Before production starts, your company will receive a binding proof for review. Carefully check the design, position, scale and color scheme, as production will only start after your express approval. Since clothing individually customized with your company logo or name is manufactured specifically for your company, it cannot be exchanged once production has started; furthermore, the regular delivery time of the raw material is extended accordingly due to the production process.

Checklist: Planning company clothing for the team

  • Area of use clarified: Is it purely workwear or certified protective clothing (PPE)?
  • For high visibility clothing (DIN EN ISO 20471), check that the selected logo size does not fall below the minimum area of the background material
  • For weather protection (DIN EN ISO 24232, previously DIN EN 343), heat (DIN EN ISO 11612) and forestry protection clothing (DIN EN ISO 11393), the permitted method according to the manufacturer's specifications has been selected
  • Application method determined: Direct embroidery (optional with name embroidery) for sturdy fabrics or transfer logo for fine details and membrane textiles
  • Positions defined per item group (chest, sleeve, back, bib pocket, thigh or side pocket) and size class (up to 50, 300 or 500 cm²)
  • Logo files (max. 2 designs as PDF, PNG or JPG up to 5 MB) and, if applicable, the name-size list prepared
  • Time buffer for the coordination of the proof and the subsequent production taken into account in the procurement planning
